The Philippines: Travel Blog Entry #1

Hello all,

Janet, as I promised, here is a little travel blog: Admittedly, I wanted to do this when we first touched down in Manila on Christmas morning yesterday. Who am I kidding? I wanted to start blogging in SFO but it was not very practical at the time. Either that or I have been having a case of writer’s block. One is inclined to suspect the latter.

Anyway, I believe video would speak more volumes than my words, but because I did not want to drop $400 on a GoPro, I am going with my second choice.

Let me start by saying being back in Manila reminds me of my trip in 2007 when I traveled abroad with my old Church, Freedom Worship Center. Life has changed a lot in the past 13 or so years, and that is an understatement. I am a completely different person in a whole new phase of life. Life is not as simple now as it was back in those days.

I fell in love with this place 13 years ago and it seems that nothing has changed. People still drive in that scary style of every and woman for themselves. Here, pedestrians do not have the right of way. Also, I have seen poverty on an entirely different level here. It breaks my heart to see groups of children under the age of 10 walking into standstill traffic to solicit money from passing motorists.

As I remember the late great Anthony Bourdain, I remember his passion for what he did and the people he visited all over the world. I aspire to have the same level of passion and love as he had.

I hope to write more or drop a ton of money on a camera.

Merry Christmas, Skylar
